Mexico is an extremely popular tourist destination for a number of reasons. The country has everything a visitor would want: beautiful beaches, amazing shopping, exciting historical monuments, and delicious food. In fact, it is one of the top ten tourist destinations in the entire world! Those visiting Mexico may find themselves confused by the traditional cuisine. Much of Mexican cuisine has been brought to the United States and has been changed to suit the different palates there.
Real Mexican food does not come out of a fast food restaurant. Real Mexican food is extremely colorful and very spicy. Spanish explorers brought their dishes over from the homeland, and mixed their dishes with traditional Aztec meals, creating an eclectic, spicy, colorful mixture. The food in Mexico varies depending on the area that tourists are visiting. For instance, southern Mexico is most known for chicken dishes, while northern Mexican dishes rely more on beef for protein.
One appetizer that most tourists will find on their menu is Spanish rice. This is created using white rice and mixing it with garlic, onions, tomatoes and other spices. It is an excellent start to any meal. Pambazo is another popular appetizer. It’s created by dipping bread into a pepper sauce. The dish is very spicy, but is the perfect start to most traditional Mexican meals.
There are a number of meals that are popular for the main course. One popular meal is the burrito. A Mexican burrito is a simple, but delicious meal, created by filling a flour tortilla with beans, rice or meat. It is often eaten for lunch by the locals, and can be spiced up and served gourmet style in some of the more expensive restaurants. Chimichanga’s are burritos that have been deep-fried. This creates a crispy outside, and a soft inside.
Carne asada is Spanish for grilled meat. This meat is served in a number of dishes, including burritos, fajitas and the ever-famous tacos. Very rarely is carne asada served alone. Sometimes, however, the term carne asada stands for a large barbecue, where friends and family are invited. A large portion of grilled meat is served in the middle of the table, with a number of different side dishes served to compliment the meat.
Chocolate is known more for being a drink than for being a dessert in Mexico. It is often served for breakfast in the place of coffee. Tequila is the drink that is most recognized as being from Mexico. It was created by the Aztecs in the 16th century, when they let the agave plant ferment. Spanish conquistadors brought Brandy with them to the new world, but once they ran out of that, they began making their own tequila. Now certain parts of Mexico have become known as “party centers” due to the constantly flowing tequila. Those specific cities are great for bringing tourists in, but are also cities that tend to have problem with crime and people abusing the alcohol.
