Nepal is the country located directly in between China and India. It is a mountainous country, having eight of the highest peaks in the world within its borders. There are a number of things for tourists to do within the country. The shopping is always good, as is visiting the many museums. Nepal, however, is one of the best places to go for outdoor people. Many visit the country in order to raft or take part in a jungle safari. And, of course, some visit the country to climb the peaks of the highest mountains in the world, including Mt Everest and Mt Kathmandu.
Nepal is very different from most countries when it comes to food. There is a huge amount of cultural diversity, which means that there have been a number of different cuisines that have emerged. Really, there is no one set type of cuisine that is considered to be from Nepal. Instead, there are a number of different types of cuisines. This is excellent for the tourist, as it means they will get to experience a number of different types of food instead of having to stick with just one.
There are a few dishes that are linked straight to Nepalese cuisine. One dish is lentil soup. This is a vegetarian dish that is made with lentils and other vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes and onion. Everything is then pureed together and it is served hot. This dish might be followed by bhat, or boiled rice, and tarkari. Tarkari is a vegetable curry which is extremely spicy and very delicious. The entire meal may be served with beer, as it is created in a number of different towns in the country. Westerners need to beware: Nepalese beer is often not served cold.
Nepali citizens do eat meat, but not as often as they eat vegetables. Curried meat is available to purchase, but most people save it for special occasions, as it is extremely expensive. Guests in the country are likely to be surprised that cows are not eaten in the country. Instead, water buffalo are the main meat of the country. Tourists may see the word “buff” on a menu. “Buff” is short for water buffalo. The taste is remarkably similar, but the water buffalo is a bit more gamey tasting.
Another favored dish is Gurr. Gurr is created by grinding up raw potatoes and mixing potent spices in with it. The mixture is then fried and made to look like a pancake. Cheese is almost always served with Grr. Visitors to the country might be hesitant to try lassi. Traditional lassi is created by mixing curds with water. Sometimes rosewater or other flavorings, such as mango or strawberry, are put into the drink. This is a drink that should be imbibed when the weather is warm, and tastes much better than it sounds.
