Austria is a land-locked country that is located in Central Europe. It is surrounded by culture in the forms of Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic. Austria was dealt a blow when World War II occurred, but it has since come back and is becoming a hot tourist destination. It has an old-world charm and beautiful scenery. Many tourists find themselves visiting it in order to go hiking. The Austrian Alps have a number of different trails and shelters which allows even the most novice of hikers to enjoy themselves.
The cuisine of Austria is considered to be one of the most transcultural cuisines in Europe. Most of the world knows Austria for it’s delicious pastries and sweets, but there are many different types of foods that are created in the country.
One traditional Austrian dish is wiener schnitzel. Wiener schnitzel is piece of veal that has been coated in breadcrumbs and fried. It has become a popular dish all over the world. Some people confuse the dish with a type of sausage, due to the name. Powidl is another well-known dish. It is created using plum. The plums used for this stew are generally picked as late in the season as possible, so as to add sweetness to the dish. It is cooked for a few hours and is stored in the winter in traditional crockery.
Gulasch is an extremely popular dish that is served in Austria. It is often spelled goulash and came, originally, from Hungary. It is just as popular in Austria. The dish is created using beef, onions, paprika and some red peppers. The meat is cut up and browned. Onions, garlic and peppers are added to the mixture in order to brown, and then water is put into the pan. Potatoes are sometimes added to the dish in order to thicken the stew a bit. Goulash is often served with dumplings or wish mashed potatoes.
A number of popular sweets have come out of Vienna, including vanillakipferl. Vanillekipferl are small biscuits that are flavored with vanilla and are often served at Christmas times. Guests in the country may also find them in Viennese coffee shops. Sachertorte is an extremely rich chocolate cake. It was created in 1932 and consists of two layers of chocolate dough with apricot jam in the middle. The cake has dark chocolate icing covering the top and sides and is served with a dollop of whipped cream.
Apfelstrudel is another sweet treat served in Austria. It is a pastry jacket that is filled with sugar, cinnamon, raising, bread crumbs and apples. Some recipes call for rum in order to add more flavor to the pastry. The pastry is sealed and is baked until it is brown. The dough part of the pastry should be extremely thin and crispy when it comes out of the oven. Powdered sugar is sprinkled on top of it and sometimes vanilla ice cream is put along side of it.
