Cuba is a beautiful island located in the Caribbean. It is located between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Many people visit Cuba for the beautiful beaches and the amazing nightlife. Havana is the capital of the country, and is known as the place where everything is available. Baracoa is a beach-side town that is many people own property on, and Santa Clara is the home of the Che Guevara mausoleum. Cuba is certainly the place to go for those who want fun and frolicking in the sun.
Cuban cuisine is considered to be a fusion cuisine. It is a mixture of flavors from Africa, Spain and, of course, the Caribbean. African cuisine infiltrated the island when African slaves were used on the sugar cane plantations in the country, and Spanish cuisine came into the picture due to the fact that most of the tobacco plantations were worked by poor Spanish peasants.
One Cuban dish that has made it’s way to the mainland is a Cuban sandwich. A Cuban sandwich is created when a long piece of Cuban bread is piled with roast pork, Serrano ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and yellow mustard. It is pressed and cut in half. This dish has become extremely popular in a number of countries, but especially in the United States. Most of the southern states offer a Cuban sandwich on their menu, made the same way as it is made in Cuba. Some add tomatoes and lettuce into the sandwich. This is considered by many to be unacceptable.
There are other popular sandwiches served in Cuba. One is a medianoche sandwich. This sandwich is made almost exactly the same way as a Cuban sandwich is, but it is made with an egg loaf instead of Cuban bread. A pan con lechon is another pressed sandwich. This one is made with roast pork, Cuban bread, onions, and mojito. A variation on the pan con lechon is the pan con bistec, which uses flank steak instead of pork. The Elena Ruth is a well-known sandwich, created using roast turkey, cream cheese, and fruit marmalade. The frita is often considered to be the Cuban version of an American hamburger. It is made with ground beef, onions, and paprika, and is served on a small hamburger bun. It is also topped with mojito sauce and is served with French fries.
Desserts are extremely popular in Cuba, mainly because the majority of the trade going out of the country is sugar based. Desserts in Cuba range from being very simple, such as sugar and fruit being added together, to very difficult, such as the dulce de guayaba. Dulce de guayaba is made using Guava paste, which is created by mixing together gelatine, sugar, and guava.
A churro is a Spanish dessert that has become a favorite in Cuba. It is a sweet fried pastry that is often covered in powdered sugar. Marmalade is used in a number of desserts, either as a filling or a topping, and the local Plantain fruit is used frequently as well, sometimes fried and sometimes soaked in a rum mixture.
