Egypt is a large country in Africa that is connected to Asia by the Sinai Peninsula. It has long been known for being the home of Egyptian civilization, with mysterious pyramids, spooky mummies and interesting hieroglyphs. Cairo is the destination of most tourists, as it is the home of not only the Egyptian Museum, but the Giza Pyramids as well. Luxor is where the gateway to the Valley of the Kings lies, and Siwa is a hidden oasis town that has much to offer it’s visitors. Egypt is truly a country that caters to adventurers and casual travelers alike.
Like much of the eastern Mediterranean countries, traditional Egyptian cuisine consists of many different herbs and spices. Lamb is the popular protein and vegetables are often stuffed and eaten as a side dish.
One dish that is considered to be the national dish of Egypt is called ful medames. Ful medames is a dish that is usually eaten for the breakfast meal. Fava beans are cooked in a copper pot extremely slowly and for a long period of time. This makes the beans easy to mash. After they have been mashed, olive oil and garlic is added. Onion, garlic and lemon juice are also used to season the mashed fava beans. Baladi bread is sometimes served along side the dish, as well as hard boiled eggs and other vegetables.
Shawerma is another popular Egyptian dish. It is a sandwich that is made up using either lamb, chicken or goat. A large piece of meat is skewed with onion and tomato on top. It is roasted for a number of hours. The meat is then shaved off in thin slices and is put into a pita bread or other flatbread. Sometimes hummus, Amba sauce or pickled vegetables are put into the bread. It is often eaten as fast food and is available on a number of carts around the larger cities. Dukkah is another quick snack. It is a mixture that is created using nuts, seeds and other spices. Often pita bread is dipped into olive oil and then the mixture. This gives the bread a different taste and is extremely nutritious to eat.
Kushari is a popular dish and is served in most of the restaurants in the country. Kushari is created using a base of lentils, chickpeas, macaroni and rice. These are topped with garlic and tomato sauce and fried onions are often put on top. It is similar to the Western spaghetti and meatballs meal, but has a much more spicy taste.
