Belgium lies in Western Europe. Brussels, the capital of the city, is generally the first tourist attraction for most visitors to the country. Most people who live in the country feel that Brussels is not a good representation of the entire culture, but it does have some beautiful architecture and interesting historical buildings. Bruges was the world’s biggest city and has been entirely preserved. It is considered to be the biggest historic center in Europe and has been called one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are a number of medieval gardens and historical things to see and enjoy.
Belgium is known as a country where the food is delicious and comes in massive quantities. The dishes are often described as simple, but are made with taste in mind, not presentation. One typical dish is moules frites, which is simply fried mussels and chips. A popular side-dish is stoemp, which is made using mashed potatoes, bacon, cream and root vegetables. This side-dish is often served alongside sausage.
Waterzooi is a traditional Belgian stew. The dish is created using fish, carrots, potatoes, leeks, an egg yolk, cream, butter and fish or vegetable stock. The vegetables are fried with peppercorns and then stock is added and brought to a boil. Fish is thrown in and the dish is allowed to simmer. The fish is ten removed and cut. Egg yolk is then put into the stock along with cream and heated until almost boiling. The cut-up fish is added and the dish is ready.
Vlaamse stoofkarbonaden is another popular stew. It is very similar to a Beef Bourguinon, which is made using beef that has been stewed in red wine and cooked with garlic, carrots, onions and other vegetables. Vlaamse stoofkarbonaden is almost exactly the same recipe, but instead of red wine, beer is used to cook the beef in.
Belgium is known around the world for its delicious chocolates. One popular chocolatier is Neuhaus. This chocolate store was begun in Brussels in 1857. It has stores in over fifty countries and supplies chocolate to even more. The chocolate out of Belgium is known to be creamy, rich, and utterly delicious.
Another popular export from Belgium is beer. Belgian beer comes in many different shapes and colors, from a lager to a lambic or Flemish red beer. There are thousands of cafes in Belgium that offer Belgium beer, and there are thousands of places in the world where you can get beer that has been brewed in Belgium. Many beer connoisseurs believe that Belgian beer should be served at “cellar” temperature in an appropriate glass. Every type of beer in Belgium has it’s own specific glass. These glasses are often created by the brewery and are said to enhance the flavor of the beer.
